ROSE BENGAL STAINING
Rose bengal is another stain
which stains epithelial cells
(on the cornea or conjunctiva)
where the mucoid layer of
the tear film is missing, dead
or degenerating cells, and
mucous strands. It is supplied
on strips just like fluorescein
or as a solution. Only a small
amount of the stain is required
and if too much is instilled it
will be uncomfortable for the
patient. One must be careful
with it as it will stain clothing
and not be easily washed out
as fluorescein is.
Areas of staining will appear as reddish-purple spots.
